Wednesday, 18th July - Baliniska 5K (Furey Series) - Report

The last race of the Furey Insurance 5k race series came to a coclusion on Wednesday, 18th July with individaual winners of the series up for grabs. With six races held between Donegal and Derry, it was very well supported throughout. 126 runners took to the start line at Templemore and Inishowen AC was well represented on the night with eleven athletes turning out. Up front it was two local athletes battling for top spot, with Emmet Mc Ginty of City of Derry opening up a 10 second lead over Scott Rankin to win the race in 15.33, followed by Rankin, who won the overall race series, in 15:34. In the women's race. City Of Derry athlete Marina Campbell was the clear winner in 18.27 with clubmate Catherine Lilburn second in 18.38. Of the Inishowen AC athletes, Gerard Doherty was the first finisher in a time of 17.53 with Shane Doherty crossing the line in 18.37.

Next on the athletics calender is the Malin 5k and Juvenlie 1 Mile race on Sunday, 28th July, 3pm start, followed by The Danny Mc Daid 15k in Letterkenny on Sunday, 12th August, 11am start.

Huge numbers of runners and walkers turned out for the St. Johnston/Carrigans 5k 2012, the first time the race has been included in the Donegal Grand Prix series. Over 230 athletes took to the starting line, with many from the locality taking part. The event organising committee would like to thank everyone who marshalled the course, those who made sandwiches and served refreshments after the race, and Kildrum Tigers FC for the use of their facilities and parking. Thanks also goes to Maurice Toland and the Fisherman's Inn for providing an excellent venue for the post-race presentations.

Well done to all category winners, with over €800 in prize money paid out on the night.

Wednesday, 20th June saw the thirteenth race of the Donegal Grand Prix series in Dunree with 95 runners taking to the start line. Foyle Valley were the in-form club on the night, taking the first three spots. Pius Mc Intyre set the pace from the start and was never challanged on a fast course,leading home the field in a time of 16.21. His clubmate Chris Mc Guinness was 2nd in 16.45. Top Inishowen AC finisher was Gerard Doherty in 18.14 with Christian Mc Ginley next in 14.28. In the women's race, Karen Crossan made a winning return to race action for Inishowen with victory in a time of 20.05. Sarah Marie Doherty was 2nd in 20.15. Well done to all who helped organise the event.
