Just short of 200 athletes took part in the Adaravan Clinic sponsored Inishowen Half Marathon on one of the sunniest days of the year. The talking point was the performance of visiting Kenyan athlete Gideon Kimosop, who stormed to victory in a eye-catching 1:06:07, one of the fastest half marathon times in the country so far this year and smashing the course record of 68:04 set in 2013.
From the gun it was a two-man race with City of Derry athlete Greg Roberts taking an early lead. But Kimosop showed his class by opening a lead at four miles which Roberts could not take back. Roberts crossed the line in 2nd place in an impressive 1:09:23, with North Leitrim AC athlete Liam Feely in 3rd place in 1:13:18.
There was some good performances by Inishowen athletes with David Porter finishing 10th in 1:24:23 followed by Philip Callaghan in 11th in 1:24:32.
In the ladies race, Claire McGuigan took advantage of the absence of last year's winner Pauline Curley to go one better and win comfortably in 1:27:38. Behind McGuigan was a battle for 2nd place between Letterkenny AC athlete Margarate Kelly and Inshowen AC stalwart Helena Crossan, who was a surprise entry on the day. Kelly eventually shrugged off the challenge from Crossan to cross the line in 1:34:25, with Crossan close behind in 1:34.55 to take 3rd place on her return to competitive action.
