Pauric McKinney Second at Castlefin on Inishowen DebutPauric McKinney XC 2012

Following a busy road season, Sunday, 7th October saw the first of the cross-country championships take place in Castlefin. With running conditions superb on the day, Inishowen runners were confident that medals were up for grabs. It was a day to remember for Inishowen AC, Pauric McKinney making his debut in the yellow singlet. With a distinguised running career, winning both National and County titles, his presence gave the other Inishowen athletes a boost for the race ahead.

With clubs from all over Doneagl competing, it ws going to be a tough task to get in the medals. From the start the Inishowen men battled hard against Finn Valley, Tir Chonaill and Letterkenny. Pauric McKinney, last year's champion, was sharing the lead with James Flanagan (Tir Chonnaill AC) throughout the race, but was eventually pipped at the post to take individual silver. With the rest of the team urged on, Joe McKinney was next of the IAC athletes home in a highly commendable 5th place to put Inishowen in a team medal position. With superb runs by Ollie Thomas, Ronan Whoriskey, Finbarr Gallagher, Sean McDaid, Mick Harkin, Michael Collins, Francis Doherty and Owen McKinney, Inishowen AC were awarded team silver behind Finn Valley AC.

IAC Ladies XC 2012Next up was the Inishowen Ladies Masters team, competing in the 3k race. With the men winning medals, all hope was that the ladies could emulate that achievement and bring another medal back to the Club. With strong teams from Letterkenny and Finn Valley, Inishowen AC were the underdogs. But with Tracy Harley finishing in 7th and Liz McDaid in 9th, medals were in the reckoning. Adding superb runs by Breedge Collins and Aideen McLaughlin to the list, a bronze medal was heading back to Inishowen!
