“Running Mad Dan” 8th at European 100k Championships

Running Mad Dan

Inishowen Athletics Club ultra-runner Dan Doherty finished an excellent 8th in the European 100k Championships in Belves, France on Sunday, 28th April. Dan’s time of 7 hours 5 minutes 58 seconds was less than a minute outside the Irish record for the distance. The course, an out-and-back loop situated in the Dordogne region, was quite technical and much more hilly than typical 100k terrain, suggesting that Dan’s finishing time was all the more impressive. Dan paced himself extremely well despite the hills and picked off a handful of Russians and Norwegians over the last 30k to go from 19th position to 8th position as the finish line loomed. The last kilometre, a 6/7 degree winding incline was “the toughest kilometre of my life”. Dan has been on fire recently, winning the Anglo Celt Plate 100k (31st March) in 7.05.23. The Irish 100k record of 7.05.06 is sure to fall in the near future. Dan will now tackle the World 24-Hour Championships to be held in the Netherlands, 11th & 12th May, just over two weeks after his European 100k exploits. It will be Dan’s first taste of 24 Hour road running. Judging by his current form, another impressive result could be on the cards for Running Mad Dan.
